Recording is off tempo

When I record in Vegas 4.0, my playback is slightly off from the time in which I recorded it. In other words, if I record to a metronome, and my playing is on time with the metronome, there's some sort of delay and when I play back the recorded file, it's no longer in time with the metronome but instead about a split second off.

Gotta ask for one slight clarification ...

Is your recording really off tempo (as in, the metronome is 116bpm and the recording is 114bpm or something like that), or is it just delayed (both are 116bpm, but the recording comes the same amount late after each beat)? These are quite different problems. The first is utterly bizarre and you may have some hardware problems to resolve. The second is probably just a latency issue and can be corrected with a simple preference setting.
