recording monitor screen?

I can not find how to record my monitor screen. I want to do some tutorial videos for music production software, I but I can find how to record my actions on my monitor screen.

There are many screen recorder softwares.
Camtasia is one of the best, but it's expensive.

AVI Screen is a free screen capture program but is a little quirky.

Sometimes the files don't import right into Vegas and has to be re rendered in Super, Media Converter or Format Factory to work. Other times it works fine..

Windows Media Encoder is another free, simple option that has worked well for me.
