Recording problem

I am trying to add some comments to a video via an external microphone on my laptop. I keep getting the error msg. listed below and then it closes the application. Any ideas what it means?

(System: Win98se/VV3.0c)

As a follow-up, I checked the mic by connecting it directly to my TRV30 camera and it works fine. I can connect the mic to the laptop and can hear my voice through the external speakers, but I get the above error and program crash each time I try to record to VV3.0c. I can also record to the laptop using Microsoft's 'recorder' program.

I read through 119 msgs. found through the 'search' engine regarding voiceovers. I didn't find anything pertaining to this problem in your knowledge base. The sound card that I neglected to mention in the first post is a "Yamaha DS-XG Legacy Sound System" in a Sony Vaio laptop.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi Bob,

What sound device is listed in the Vegas Options>Preferences>Audio>Audio device type?

Have you installed any other audio drivers/HW/SW?

Could you describe the process you use to record in Vegas?

On my Sony Vaio laptop Vegas shows "microsoft Sound Mapper". (It can record, no problem.) System info shows SoundMax Audio HW

Marty,

Thanks for the reply. Vegas options also show 'microsoft sound mapper'. I have tried it also with 'windows classic wave driver' and that changes the default playback/recording devices to the DS-XG. Either way it still crashes VV3. The system info shows mine as "Yamaha DS-XG Legacy Sound System". Absolutely _nothing_ has been added (sw/hw) since I last upgraded to VV3c. But to be honest, I never tried the mic recording with the earlier versions.

As far as the process I use:
Open new project/veg
Add audio track
Arm for record
Pop-up window asks where to put the file (not what to name it), I use the default
Once I click on OK, the 'title bar' of the pop-up window flashes quickly and repeatedly and then the error msg. from previous post shows and I must exit VV3.

I attempted to record again this morning had the same problem but got a DIFFERENT listing under the details of the crash. The page fault was in a different .dll file:

Hi Bob,

You might try recording to another drive, partition, folder, etc.

The default recordings folder can be changed in the project properties panel.

You might check the Vegas Audio forum (if you haven't already).

I have built quite a few computers and I can tell you that on one of them which I built for my oldest son who composes music, I had to uninstall the Yamaha synthesizer
and renove it from the registry with "RegEdit" software because was locking up the computer. It is buggy and doesn't like to "share". That computer was also running W98SE same as yours.

Use at your own risk.

Marty,

I changed the 'save to' to a totally different drive and I got the same fault msg. as the last time:

John,

I appreciate your help also. I went to the site you posted, but since I am basically just an 'end user' and not very adventurious I was clueless as to what I was supposed to download much less how to change the drivers. Other than what is listed in the 'Device Manager' I have no way of identifying the sound chip/card other than 'Yamaha DS-XG Legacy Sound System". Thanks for your help.

John,

One other note that I just discovered is the I CAN record via SoundForge XP (version 4.5f - Build 363). This leads me to believe that there is in fact some problem within VV3.0c.
