Recording Several Instruments Separate Tracks

What do I need for my laptop in order to record several instruments at the same time, each with their own individual track in Vegas?
I have a Tascam USB 122 with four mic inputs but it combines all four iinto only one track.
I need to record four individual tracks...one for each instrument so they can be mixed later. Appreciate any help.

You need a sound card that will allow you to input several tracks at once, or you need an a to d converter that will feed usb or firewire.

For reliability, you need a cardbuss or firewire audio interface and a fast (7200 RPM) HDD especially since the OS and audio drive will be one in the same. Unfortunately most laptops have 5400 RPM or less HDDs.

Cant suggest a laptop for 4+ tracks.
Look at M-Audio.com They have good stuff. Then find a better price. I use a Delta 1010 for live band recording. 8 analog in and out plus 2 digital in and out. Be careful about claimed no. of in and outs. Usually 2 of them are digital and you will have to use an A/D converter to take advantage of it for recording analog. The Delta 44 will do what you want cheaply.

Just looked at your US 122 at the Tascam site. Sorry, it only has 2 outs. The inputs are mixed together and they dont recomend doing that either. BTW If you purchased it after August 1 2004 you can get some free software.
Are you sure your only getting 1 track? Vegas tracks open by default as stereo tracks. Open the tracks, Ctrl-Q, then on each track click on the round record button and select mono then choose a different source track for each from the drop down menu. You should be able to get two seperate tracks from the 122.
