Connect your mic and choose the arm for record button (twice), in the trackheader and the button beyond the tracks.

So, the arm for record is the hamburger looking menu icon. I get it. Also, I didn't realize I had to plug in a mic. Thank you.

No, in that menu you can (dis)select that function or you can choose in the Visible Button Set to let the button becomes visible as a trackheader button for selecting.
After that function is activated, the button on the timeline toolbar becomes visible to activate.
