Don't know about FCP and I doubt anyone else does either.
Yes Vegas can edit RED footage but limited to 8bit 2K. Given how RED works and the limited distro for 4K that's not a big limitation.

Apple will announce FCP Extreme the Sunday before NAB next month, supporting 4K and much more, cost is rumored to be $10K-$30K depending on the hardware support you buy, shipping likely to be summer though.

There should also be a more modest FCP6 consolation version for the riff-raff who can't quite afford the Extreme.

RED will show this with true Sony 4K projection at NAB also.

Is RED working? Or is this like saying can I use Vegas to edit the unicorn footage I hope to capture?

1- Isn't FCP Extreme just a rumour? And a not very reliable one at that, from thinksecret.com. As others have commented, thinksecret has way, way, way off the mark before... many times.

Red's upcoming 4K digital cinema camera, a revolutionary piece of equipment that is said will be priced upwards of $200,000.
It turned out that Red's target price was $17,500.

2- The Red team I believe has their prototype working. You can see their progress at red.com (footage you can d/l) and at reduser.net.

They should have something to show at NAB... 85% functionality or so.

FCP Extreme is not official, but this time it is from several independent sources, not just from thinksecret.

FCP Extreme was originally scheduled to be released much earlier, but the development team had to be pulled when Apple Aperture 1.0 got a lukewarm reception, and they had to go all out to come up with Aperture 1.5 before continuing with FCP Extreme.

The RED info is the official story from the RED team themselves, expecting to show everything important, and the absence of RGB recording I don't think will have anyone's knickers in a twist at this time, especially with a promise of a retrofit later.

From what I've seen, many sources have gotten their info from thinksecret. Are there any sources that haven't done this?

FCP Extreme isn't a rumor. the name may be, but the product isn't.
Dunno about release date, but Apple themselves fielded this rumor at NAB last year, and they weren't too close-mouthed about it. Rumor of price however, is a different story. I've heard numbers ranging from 10k to 19K, just for the software and support package. Still a steal compared to a Symphony etc.

...from several independent sources, not just from thinksecret.

I do not use the word "independent" if there is a dependence. Being a repeater would be the ultimate dependence. I got my info from a well connected working pro, who is subject primarily to the whims of last minute product changes (and I don't even read thinksecrets, as I generally don't have time for products that haven't been through real life testing first...).

The idea is very clear: give Avid real nightmares this time...

The announcement is also said to include the pricey and very capable Shake successor, to be released next year.
