red thumbnails, system crashing Vegas Mov S v8

Hi, when I try to import media or drag my MPEG files into the time line Sony Vegas Movie Studio 8 keeps crashing. Symptoms include: video file not having a thumbnail in the ‘project media’ area; media being ‘off-line’, media appearing in the timeline with red thumbnails; file thumbnails turning red; the system not being able to find the media and asking for its location; not being able to read the files even when the location is given; the system giving error messages such as ‘an exception has occurred’ and crashing; and a couple of times messages regarding insufficient memory and others regarding ‘media offline’.

I have made several videos before using exactly the same equipment, and not had this problem.

I have tried recreating the video project several times, importing very small numbers of video files into the project media section (as opposed to importing a whole bunch) and pasting the files very slowly into the time line and waiting. I have noticed that when I drag the media in it splits it into two files in the source folder, one MPEG file and one .sfx file, but I can open each invidual video file and play it with no problem.

I’ve run a virus check on both the files and program – and there doesn’t seem to be a problem. Yet it seems like the files have somehow been corrupted.
I’ve been doing this for a week now!! Any suggestions on how to de-bug potentially corrupted files, or how to get around this? With thanks :)
