Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9 has the ability to upload files directly to youtube website and will encode the video according to the correct specifications for high-quality / low file size.

In Platinum 9, you can use the Make Movie / Upload it to the Web / YouTube option.

In my tests, Vegas would save a 15 min video to estimated 101 mb using Normal Quality and ~350 mb using the High Quality setting.

Here's a link to the VMSP9.0 trial page:

If you're using Pro or do not have the latest version, you could try the settings recommended on this Knowledgebase article:

Can't be done. The maximums on YouTube are Length: 10 min, and size 1 gig.

You can break the file up into two parts if you'd like.

I would render to DVD quality mpg2 instead of avi. It's not the absolute "best" but it's good enough for most things, and a *lot* shorter upload time than an avi file.
