Reducing project size

I'm working with a video that is an hour and 44 minutes long, which is too long to fit on a single DVD.

I'm trying to cut down the length of the project to something that will fit on a dvd and thought I could do so by "Setting in and Out points". After adjusting my in and out points, when I go to burn the dvd, I still have a project too long to fit on the dvd.

I'm new to this software and would appreciate coaching.

Thanks

1) 1:44 is NOT too long to fit on a DVD even with respectable bit rates.

2) If you are bringing in an .avi and setting the in and out points , then only the media within those points is encoded to Mpeg. If you bring in media that is already compliant (Mpeg), DVDA will not re-encode unless you tell it to, so it uses the whole file without regard to your in and out markers.

Okay, I understand Vegas is sending an MPEG to DVDA. Where is the re-encode command in DVDA...and I really appreciate your response.
