Refuses to see Sony Camera

Of all the stuff-- I am trying to capture 1080i video from an HDV camera (hdr-fx1) and on the first pass, Vegas 6 saw it but wouldn't capture the video. Later, it refused to see the camera at all. TROUBLESHOOTING said to open the CAPTURE window and click the (hand holding a yellow menu) icon "Preferences" and set the "device" manually-- but, of course, there is NO PREFERENCE ICON in the box.

Any clues on why Sony Software doesn't see a Sony Camera?

Why would Sony want you to use a Sony camera with Vegas....that makes no sense!
