Reinstalling Safe?

My scanner suddenly isn't recognized by Vegas, but works otherwise. Is there any harm in reinstalling Vegas (5)? Will I lose anything? Do I have to uninstall first? Thanks to any feedback!

The first thing I try (for any software...even the OS) when I have problems like that is re-apply the last service pack/update.

Sometimes it fixes it, sometimes not, but either way, it doesn't look like a "new" install, so no settings are lost.
