Release of DVD Menu Theme Editor

bcbarnes wrote on 6/30/2003, 7:40 AM
I'm making the first non-BETA release of DVD Menu Theme Editor. This is version 1.5, and it includes a "check for updates" menu option, so I won't need to waste bandwith on the forum with announcements of fixes.

You can download this version here:

Follow the link at the bottom of the page.

BCBarnes,
thanks, this is a fabulous tool that you are sharing;
actually I think this has a place in this forum, more so than some of the other items and I would even encourage the forum moderators to make a special area for DVD Themes where this and other theme related items could be discussed.
thanks again,
Gold

BTW - If any of you have downloaded the newest version, and tried the "Check for updates", you'll probably get a message saying that the update ID file is corrupt. This is being caused because I've apparently exceeded my "bandwidth limit" on the hosting site, and it is refusing any more accesses today. :(

Ah I thought, great a new version again. trouble is I can't get onto your site at all for the reasons you gave. S I thought I would be clever and try at 15:00 Western Australian time which is GMT +7 hours. Still locked out.

I'll keep trying.
Thanks
Dave

Success at 15:45 hrs. Thanks

Dave,

Thanks for the comments, and glad you were able to finally get it. My apologies to anyone that is being inconvenienced by the fact that I'm too cheap to pay for higher bandwidth limits...

I am currently working on the next version (1.6). I have add NTSC Widescreen and PAL widescreen resolutions, and I'm still playing with the blur preview (Can't come up with a fast enough algorithm...). Please email me (my email address is in the help file) with any other suggestions.

Brian

believe me, you're not cheap - creating what you have and making it available to all - you're enriching us all!

Brian,
Before I downloaded your editor, I downloaded & installed the .netframework exe version 1.1 (I had previously installed version 1.0 of the .netframework exe). I ran your installer and all seemed well. When I launched the program I got an error msg. about "Application has generated an exception that could not....." I don't recall the rest of it but I hit the button to run the 'debug' function and got an additional error about some compiler. I then thought I would uninstall/reinstall and I got the option to repair your program but it failed also.

System: Win98SE/256RAM/Vegas4.0+DVDA

Any ideas on what I might have done wrong?

Bob

PS. How come no one has added any of their creations to the website furnished by Sonic Foundry for themes? www.sonicfoundry.com/products/dvda/default.asp
bcbarnes wrote on 7/7/2003, 7:32 PM
Bob.

Interesting. I haven't tried it on anything except Windows XP, so it might be that Win98SE is the problem - although I would assume that any platform that supports .NET 1.1 would work. Let me go through my documentation and see if there are any resources that are marked "not available on Win98".

Sounds great, but, unfortunately, the download link doesn't work. Why can't you get Sonic Foundry to post the file to their downloads page (http://www.sonicfoundry.com/download/Step2.asp?DID=435)?

Brian,

Don't forget that I had the exact same problem on Win2k SP4 (& SP3).
I have the demo installed, as I'm still waiting for delivery.
(FYI. Details were sent to Brian in separate email).

pbnyc,

The current link should be:

http://www.briancbarnes.homestead.com/files/Setup.1.9.Zip

However, this is version dependent, so the best thing to do is go to:

http://www.briancbarnes.homestead.com

And you will find a link at the bottom of the page.

Jeff,

Quite right. More clues...

I don't think this is anything to do with Win98SE - the theme editor has always worked just fine on my home Win98SE machine.

(I haven't updated to the latest version yet so it's just possible that some Win98SE specific problem has crept into the latest version, but I'd think it is unlikely. I can confirm that it worked without giving any error messages on Win98SE on every version from the first beta up to V.1.6. I'll check it with the latest version tonight when I get home just to be certain.)

I've just updated my Win98SE machine to V.1.9 of the Theme Editor and it still works just fine - no sign of the "Application has generated an exception that could not....." error that Bob is getting.

Don't know what is causing it, but it doesn't seem to be anything to do with Win98SE.

Mark,

Thanks for the info. Has to be something else then. I'll keep playing with it, and if anyone else is having the problem, or can shed more light on the error message they are getting, let me know.

I MUST be having "bad luck", because I never seem to be able to access the file at the right time. I'm always getting the "limit has been reached".

Are others having success?

Brian,

Finally got delivery of Vegas+DVD yesterday and was able to download
the 1.9 Theme Editor today.

After installing the full (registered) version and the latest updates, the
1.9 Theme Editor works now. Possibly the problem was that the Theme
Editor doesn't work with the demo version ?

Note also, that I'm using a different computer for the full version, but both
are running Win2k SP4. I'm willing to try the other computer, but I'm not
sure about the licensing. (Since I can't "use" the registered version without
actually re-registering on the other computer). Anybody tried registering
on multiple computers (both are mine and only used by me).

Jeff,

Glad that it works, and would love to hear what happens if you move DVDA to the other computer. I've installed the editor on a machine that did NOT have DVDA installed on it, and it worked as expected (i.e. it gave me a warning message about not being able to locate the default theme directory, but then came up as it should). Perhaps I should try installing the demo version of DVDA onto that machine...

I downloaded the program today, opened it just to see the interface.
Then I shut it. created some buttons in Photoshop to try out.
Now I cant open The Theme Editor. I have Win XP
It says:
--------------------------------------
Application has generated an expectation that could not be handled.
Process id=0=aa6c (43628), Thread id=0xaa70 (43632)

Click OK to terminate the application.
Cick CANCEL to debug the application
---------------------------------------

If I click CANCEL it says:
---------------------------------------
Registered JIT debugger is not available. An attemt to launch JIT debugger with the following command resulted in an error code of 0x2 (2). Please check

cordbg.exe !a 0xaa6c

Click on Retry to have the process wait while attaching a debugger manually.
Click on Cancel to abort the JIT debug request
----------------------------------------

What ever I click on it shuts down.
I tried to repair it, and it didn't work. Then I uninstall + reinstall it, and it didn't work.

**--I hope it can be fixed. I have been waiting for this program for a LONG time:)--**

Brian,

The error msg. that peggybell (above) received is the same one that I got...both the initial msg. and then the followup about the JIT debugger.

Ok, Bob, Peggy, and Jeff,

I've am in the process of uploading a new version. This version includes an error trap around the application that should print the message that says "Caught exception in main() : <text>".

Can one or all of you download this version, and then send me the text of the message you see. Thanks.

Brian.

Brian,

From v2.0:

Caught exception in main() : Object reference not set to an instance of an
object

-Jeff
BobMoyer wrote on 7/10/2003, 1:28 PM
Brian,

I got the same error as Jeff did from version 2.0:

Caught exception in main[] : Object reference not set to an instance of an
object.

I also ran the repair option and got the same error again upon launching 2.0. I did NOT get any error reference to the JIT compiler as I had gotten the first time.

I really appreciate your effort in getting this to run for us.

Jeff and Bob

Thanks for the help. This narrows it down, and tells me that it is something within my application that I can catch and fix. I will probably need to do one or two more special "debug" releases as I narrow down the problem. Hope that you won't mind...

I'll let you know when the next one is ready (My niece is visiting tonight through Saturday, so I may not be able to get to it right away :(....).

Thanks again for the quick response. Believe me, your family is more important....I can wait!
