Remove black circles from 360-degree video?

AncientConstruct wrote on 12/15/2021, 1:50 AM

How can I remove the black circles from the top and bottom of my 360-degree video?

The video is made of several videos that I combined in Vegas Pro 19. The videos were taken with an Insta360 One X2, stitched in their software, Insta360 Studio 2021, and exported as MP4 files. I then combined those exported videos in Vegas, made sure the the "360 Output" box was unchecked (the necessity of which is baffling and irritating), and rendered the video. Lastly, I used the Spatial Media Metadata Injector to turn that rendered video back into a 360-degree video.

The black circles were not present in Insta 360 Studio, nor in Vegas:

So, presumably they come from whatever Spatial Media Metadata Injector does. But there are no settings for changing the stitching in Spatial Media Metadata Injector.

Any tips for what I can do?

I upgraded from Vegas Pro 14 to 19 primarily for the ability to edit 360-degree videos. Unfortunately, it's been a real headache figuring out how to render something that will play. Being able to render directly from Vegas to 360-degrees would be fantastic!

Check that it is rendered with a 2:1 aspect ratio. The black circles top & bottom suggest it was rendered with a larger y-pixel count than it should have.

Your project and render settings (and input videos) should all have a 2:1 aspect ratio.

As far a I know the spatial metadata injector doesn't re-render the video, it just adds metadata to the file.

Posting your project and render settings along with mediainfo reports for the input and rendered files would help diagnose the problem.

Right click on clip and uncheck Maintain Aspect Ratio.

I hadn't considered aspect ratio at all; I figured that 360 videos all had the same aspect ratio, and had to have that aspect ratio in order to be 360 videos. But now that you mention it, it makes sense that there could be different aspect ratios that leave gaps.

I exported from Insta360 Studio using their default 360 settings and the highest possible bitrate (200mbps), and then used whatever Vegas defaults to for 8k 59 fps. Perhaps the Vegas default is the issue.

Many thanks for your replies! Testing some things now, and then if they don't work I'll post again with render settings and such.

This worked! Thanks again!

360 videos should have a 2:1 aspect ratio. It is likely the 8k 59fps template you used has a 16:9 aspect ratio which would cause the holes.

Unchecking the Maintain Aspect Ratio will eliminate the holes, but won't necessarily create a 2:1 aspect ratio video. This is probably OK...depending on where you intend to upload or view it.

It is very easy to edit the project and render settings so they have a 2:1 aspect ratio and you can save the modified settings for future use.

Haven't experiment with 360 output, but with new build 458, tiny planet ofx can now be put before Pan & Crop chain:
