removing clicks from vinyl recordings

I’m wanting to deal with some cracks in a recording off vinyl and I need to select just the region of the crack (to replace the click with a paste from an undamaged similar area).  I’ve got Vegas Movie Studio Platinum (Version 6 Build 43) (yeah I'm old too) installed on an old XP machine and it allows me to select down to individual audio waves ( ie msecs).  Migrating to a Win 8.1 machine I can only get selections down to one video frame.

How can I change the loop selection to be small enough for my purpose on my newer machine?

I don't know . Personally I've used Audacity (a free download) for removing clicks using the method you mention to replace a click. I then exported from Audacity as a wav file and used that in my VMS project.

I use Sound Forge Pro in much the same as you and @EricLNZ describe except that Sound Forge Pro also allows for:

  1. the offending waveform sine wave containing the click to be literally redrawn (with the Pencil tool) using the mouse to reshape and thus eliminate the click; or
  2. use the Replace tool which auto replaces the offending sine wave with a composite of the surrounding sine waves (unfortunately, it isn't always all that successful); or
  3. use the Interpolate tool which allows for a small glitch/click in an otherwise straight(-ish) waveform to be removed and replaced with a straight line much as it would have been had the glitch/click not occurred in the first place.

I do not know if these tools are available in Sound Forge Audio Studio.

If sync isn't a problem (like with a VO recording), just highlighting the problem sine wave and deleting it is often much easier to do. But of course, copy/pasting to replace the deleted 'click' sine wave as you have been doing is very effective.

I have now found what I needed...under Options, I needed to toggle off "Quantize to frames" (alt-F8). Thanks for the alternative suggestions.
