Stretch one of the events on the timeline until the crossfade is gone.

Or, right click over the cross fade to reveal a drop down dialog menu, click on transition properties, then, at the top right of the resulting dialog box are little square buttons. One allows you to add more FX to the chain, the other has a sort of swoosh through it, that's the delete or remove button. Click on that and the transition is really gone from your clip so that if you were to resize the clip or drag it over the edge of another, no transition of any sort would occur (I'm sure there are times when an editor wants to do this, or SF would not have designed this feature thusly).

Yep, I guess you're right. Actually, I've only used a few of the actual transitions. They're fun and all, but, for most of my work the auto business works just fine.
