Removing interlacing artifacts from 480p

I'm trying to improve some old footage that was rendered from DV to DVD. All I have is the DVD. The issue is that the DVD was rendered in progressive format and the entire video has interlacing artifacts. I would like to re-render to mpg and want to remove the interlacing artifacts. The footage is already in 480p format, so presumably can't be re-deinterlaced? Any thoughts?

If you can do without .mpg output, Handbrake has about the best deinterlacing around. It will import your DVD straightaway, and output progressive .mp4 (x264). As to its effectiveness in removing artifacts from badly deinterlaced material, that is an individual challenge and will require some trial and error. Again, Handbrake's comb detection is very good. If you could upload a minute or so of the footage somewhere it would help in determining just how much could be done.

Musicvid,

Thanks for the offer to help. Happy to move it to mp4, if that is the best path forward. I have Handbrake already loaded up (thanks to your previous tutorial!), so I'll give it a try.

Do you think that there is anything that can be done with VMS by first intent?

Can you upload a minute of smart-rendered mpeg-2?
And thx for subscribing on YT.

Musicvid,

Tried Handbrake and it did remove some of the combing. I lost some sharpness in the process.I'll have to keep that in the toolbox for the future. The good news, is that I was able to secure a copy of the software that was originally used to render the video, the source files and a copy of the project. What I may do is just recreate the project in SVMS from the EDL-type output.. While decombing helped, the rest of the DVD was so poor, that starting from the beginning may be yield much better output.

Thanks again for your offer to help and for all of your advice in the forum.
