Renaming .MTS AVCHD files

I've been having rendering problems with HD video from my Canon HF100 camcorder. But now I think I've solved the problem somewhat. Apparently Vegas didn't like that I renamed a bunch of the files from how they were sequentially named upon importing into a folder on my desktop (00136, 00137, 00138, etc) to things more descriptive (kids blowing out birthday cake, etc). Is there a way to rename .MTS files such that they will still work? I've read a little about "metafiles". Is this part of the solution in renaming HD files so that they are more descriptive?

Also, is there a way to see the first frame in the thumbnails of the HD video clips in Vista? All I see now is a blank white thumbnail.

I'm not sure what this has to do with a rendering problem??? What rendering problems are you have EXACTLY? (Unless of course you're renaming the EXTENSION (.MTS) which you should NEVER do).

You should be able to rename the files as: ANYTHING_YOU_WANT.MTS. I regularly rename my files befor importing them. In fact I rename them from their sequencial numbers (0001, 0002, 0003....) to the date and time of their shoot:
12,30,2009 12;31;23.MTS

You can not muck with the extension though. You also can not (or should not) rename the files AFTER you have imported them.

Thumbnails are an issue with Vista. There is an answer but it includes some detailed registry hacks. Hang on until Windows 7 comes out.... they have fixed this problem.
