renaming video media crashes VMS or fails

I am trying to rename video media that I imported from several DVDs. Using rename either crashes VMS Plat9 or it says it is being used by another program (and so the rename fails). Importing takes on the name of the original - eg. VTS_01 (01).mpg, so obviously I want to change this to something meaningful (other than every video being named to same thing) but VMS won't let me.

You could always just rename the files with Windows Explorer. You can't rename files if they are in use, so make sure no program has them open before attempting to rename them, regardless of which program you use to do it.

what I wanted to know is if this is a bug or some other problem or procedure I am missing. When it gives me opportunity to rename I expect to be able to rename. Also yes I can rename from Windows but then does the project loose it, etc. (and then I have to re-get it). Thanks, but no this can't be an answer.

I've had this happen occasionally. Well, never a crash, but being told the file is in use happens. What i've discovered is that Vegas was actually doing something with the file at the time. The most common time it happens is if i've just added the file to the project and Vegas is still busy building the peak file. I have to wait for this to finish before i can rename. A subtler case is if i've just scrolled or zoomed the timeline. Vegas could be busy reading through the file to find the new frames to display on the timeline. This is especially problematic for a format like MPEG2 which doesn't contain discrete frames so it takes a lot longer to create the desired frames from previous ones.

So, if it complains, take a breath, pet the cat, take a swig of whatever beverage you have handy, then try again a few moments later.

Alternatively, try renaming the files before placing them on the timeline. Vegas is much less likely to be doing busy-work on them at that point.

Thanks Cheinworks, but it was a no go. I waited for busyness to subside, even removed Auto Preview, but it is still refusing to do a rename of videos in the project media (all other media can be renamed). I do use a workaround of import DVD, remove from project, rename video in Windows Explorer, then re-import (oh isn't that a joy to do). Unfortunately this is only non-impact effective if you don't use video in the project initially (because then you can not remove from the project without ruining your work). I am assuming this is A BUG in ver. 9, but I can not get tech support to agree or deny (they just keep giving me dump things to try and do as an alternative - tech support and engineers are as usual a world apart).

[P.S. it quit crashing when I try a rename, so I am assuming that was something else going on.]
