Hightlight a small section of the project and render just that section to a DV .avi file. Repeat with another small section ... etc. until the whole project is rendered in small pieces. Start a new project with all the DV .avi pieces butted together and render the whole MPEG-2 and AC3 output from that.

Selecting the pieces seamlessly is quite easy. After selecting the first section and rendering it, drag the left yellow triangle past the right one to make the next selection. The next selection will start on the frame immediately following the previous selection.

Also, check your Dynamic RAM setting and put it at 0 MB during render. Upgrade to 6.0c. If you're using early 6.x versions, that could be a problem. Check your TEMP settings in Vegas and make sure the disk drive they point to isn't full.

Thanks guys.
Been rendering to .avi in chunks.
Motoronig along smoothing,---to a point.
Three or four minutes at a time.
Down to about 1 minute,---and the last attempt lasted only about a second.
This may be a clue;
Photos on this section of the timeline are greyed out in pan/crop.
Does that mean they are corrupted.
If so,---how did that happen and what do I do?

Well, if they are corrupted, you can be sure that nothing you did in Vegas corrupted them. Vegas treats source media pretty much as "read only". Can you open those files in a photo editor? Can you replace the files with other copies from your camera/scanner? What happens if you temporarily substitute other images?

Audited photos and found 18 that may be corrupted.
Don't pretend to know what that means.
These were photos that refused to appear (greyed out) when placed in pan/crop window.
Have begun to render again in chunks as suggested.
First 3 minutes OK.
Second 3 minutes crapped at at 80%.
Cut that segment to 2:30 and it rendered.
And so it goes.
Tedious.
Bet there are folks doing this in pergatory!
