Render 5.1 surround QuickTime

mflores wrote on 6/23/2010, 9:46 PM
I want to render some video that has a 5.1 audio mix to an uncompressed QuckTime format but I see there is no option under the audio tab for a 5.1 render, just mono and stereo.

Just wanted to see if I'm missing something, Ive been trying to figure it out for the last couple weeks and decided to just post it.

Any help would be awesome thanks.

You are missing something, but it's not obvious.
At least through Vegas 8, there is no 5.1 support for Quicktime. I don't know about version 9.

The good news is that AVC encoding in Vegas supports 5.1 surround. Render out a surround project to MP4 using Sony AVC, and it should play natively in Quicktime. If you want a MOV extension, just change the name.

If you need uncompressed MOV with multichannel PCM, you could render out a separate audio file, remux them in a third party application, and they should work.

I appreciate the quick response. Unfortunately, now I'm getting an error message when I try and render this way. hmm. Any thoughts on that one?

I offered you multiple options.

Exactly what is "this way" ???
Exactly what is the "error message" ???

No, I have no "thoughts on that one."

Sorry I couldn't help you more on that one, and I hope someone else can help you further

Get a clue, and start providing some specifics please.

This option sir:

"The good news is that AVC encoding in Vegas supports 5.1 surround. Render out a surround project to MP4 using Sony AVC, and it should play natively in Quicktime. If you want a MOV extension, just change the name."

and the error message:

"An error occurred while opening a codec"

Oh okay. Well thanks anyways bud. I'm sure I can dig up some info someplace.

I'm sorry for my assumption, and I should have checked it first. The only 5.1 audio that Sony AVC codec supports is .m2ts, not .mp4, as I incorrectly stated. My version of Quicktime doesn't seem to support AVCHD natively, so you are correct.

Note to self: "Add lack of AVCHD support in Quicktime to list of limitations, which include no PAR recognition and no native MPEG-2 support."

You could also try option #2 and post back with your results; thanks, and I hope you find a solution. Or, cultivate a friendship with someone who has FCP?

"My version of Quicktime doesn't seem to support AVCHD natively, "

Apple does not support avchd (or Blu Ray for that matter). You can sort of hook and crook your way around this but it's not by any means optimum.

@OP:
I *think* quicktime pro will create a 5.1 aac from 6 separate wav files, but you won't get a 5.1 aac from vegas.
