From the "Insert" menu, choose "Insert subtitles from file", then select the subtitles file (you can change the extension fron "srt" to "txt" if needed) and a template. The subtitles will appear as text events on their own track.

Then you only have to render your project as usual.

If the subtitles are text events just render the video and they will be burned in.

Is the SRT file appearing as a SUBTITLE or as CLOSED CAPTIONING? Totally different beasts.

Thanks , I imported them the wrong way before, I choose file, import, closed captioning...

Now they are text events which is what I wanted, can I somehow change the preset 'subtitles' and make them appear in 2 lines instead of 1? Some subtitles are too long now and disappear left and right. ;)

@marcel-vossen You can always open the text events that are to long and with your cursor stand on the last word you want to appear on the line and press return, this creates a newline to move the rest of the text to a new line etc...

@marcel-vossen In addition to what @bitman said, you can create your own presets from the "titles and text" window, and then choose that preset when importing subtitles.

If your version of VEGAS is one of the lastest, you will also find a "transfer text properties" button to the right of the input text box in the "titles and text" window that will transfer all the properties of the text in that event to all the other text events in the same track, in case you need to make changes after importing the subtitles. Do not use "paste event atributes" for that.
