Render As ... shuts down Vegas!

I recently persuaded a friend to get Vegas, and he is happy about it ..... BUT ...

Whenever he tries to Render As, the process begins but after less than a minute it stops and Vegas closes spontaneously.

I am going over later today to help - I'll install the 4.0d update, which may fix things, but in the meantime wondered if anyone else had experienced this. The same thing happens whether rendering to MPEG or avi.

One non-standard feature was that the original footage was MJPEG, captured with miro dc30+, but it played ok on the Vegas timeline.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I dimly recall something about the Miro30 card being IEE 1394 non-compliant, or something like that, so your problem may lie there. IEE1394 firewire cards are under $20 on Pricewatch.com..

Yes, thanks - he has already got firewire.
This avi was from a previous project which used the dc30, and had already been rendered in Premiere.

Anyway, I checked it out - I've never seen Vegas do this - just disappear in a flash, leaving the XP desktop. We narrowed it down to occurring at a particular point in the avi, during a cross fade from a caption to video - the cross fade had already been rendered in the avi, but there was obviously something funny at that point.

I have advised him to finish this job in Premiere, but it is still strange that anything like this causes Vegas to "vanish".
