"Render as" what for HD1080i?

I just got my sony fx7 and shot some sample footage with it in the HD 1080i format. I captured it in vegas 9b by specifying the HDV format in the capture dialog box. The m2t files are imported ok. My project settings are HDV 1080-60i (1440x1080, 29.97 fps).

However, when it comes to rendering, if I select the HD 1080-60i YUV template and render as an avi file, I can no longer play that file in QT/Windows media player - the video is blank though the audio can be heard.

If I render using the NTSC DV template, the avi plays fine.

Which template should I be using for rendering? I'm intending this for SD DVD using DVD Architect Pro 5.

Thanks,
Kunal

As I'm sure you know, DVD-Video only supports a maximum resolution of 720×576 pixels or in your case, 720×480 as your project is NTSC. Vegas or DVD Architect will need to reduce the resolution of the project when rendering, and for that, the best option from the 'Render As' dialogue is type: MainConcept MPEG-2 and DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream (or the 4:3 equivalent). That'll prevent the footage having to be re-rendered by DVD Architect.

Don't forget to render your audio separately...

I basically have the same question. So to get higher res/HD, I would need to create a Blu-ray disc, correct?

Yes, you need to render to a format suitable for Blu-Ray (MPEG-2 or AVCHD) and burn a Blu-ray disc... or... you can put the same footage on a DVD disc created as a Blu-ray (Google for Blu-ray on DVD) or an SDHC card for players that have support for such things.
