Render for PSP - MPEG4?

OK, I've done a forum search and can't really find what I'm looking for or can understand.

Simply put, I want to be able to render for viewing on the Sony Playstation Portable (PSP). I understand the format it requires is MPEG4. I know very little about MPEG4.

My son makes animated movies using Lego (rstudios.brickfilms.com). He edits them using Vegas (still on V5, cannot justify the expense of the upgrade yet) and we typically then render WMV, MOV and RM for his web audience.

We would like to be able to render for use on the PSP. At present, the only advice I can find is for ripping DVD VOB files and then converting these to MPEG4. Short of using DVD Architect to create a DVD of his movies, then ripping them and running them through a converter, I can't find a way to do what we want to do.

It seems that Sony are happy for people to find a way to rip (steal) DVDs and play them on the PSP, but are not supporting those of us (amateurs) who simply want to play our own content on there.

Can anyone help? To recap, simply put, I want to render from Vegas to MPEG4 for original content.

Try this web site. Very clear directions and it works. I've done it many times and the video looks really good on the PSP.

Thanks Opampman, but that is what I have already done. What I want to be able to do is take raw AVI material (where we have it) and WMV or RM files (where we lost the original AVI) and create MPEG4. Can 3GPConverter do that?

The 3GP converter is designed to work with AVI files. If you try to use wmv you'll get an error that the codec is not available.

You can use Vegas to render the wmv to avi and then use 3GP on that file.

I use PSPVideo9 available from www.pspvideo9.com - free. Using Vegas, I render to NTSC DV widescreen AVI and then load that into PSPvideo9. It supports both MPEG4 SP (any PSP firmware version) and AVC (v2.0 firmware required). AVC support at present is still a bit jerky. Sony has made video support on the PSP really complicated at present.

Thanks guys. I will try 3GP with AVI and I will also give PSPvideo9 a try. You're right about Sony making things hard Xander, and the advice you get in shops doesn't really help either. One shop assistant told me we would get up to 8 feature length movies on a 1Gb card. I managed to render a 10 minute movie, using the lowest resolution (QVGA, 15fps mono) and it still came out at 18Mb. By my reckoning, that would equate to three, maybe four 2 hour movies, tops, on a 1Gb card.
