Render problems using Vegas 4 & MPEG VCD PAL

I've got a problem rendering a project in MPEG (VCD PAL) format where the rendering stops with an undetermined error. Each time it is after 402Mb of rendering, although if i select an area smaller than this around the point in the project where the video stops, it will render past that point with no trouble. It's a bit of a pain because it takes nearly an hour and a half to get to that point and then crashes. Anybody got any ideas what could be causing the problem?

I also sometimes get a "DirectX plugin not installed" error message on startup, but it gives no details of the problem, and proves no problem in the project itself.

Just an update on this one. Had no reply from anyone, so I went and played around with it a bit. Managed to create an .avi file all the way through without any problems. The file was a bit huge (thank my soul for 120Gb hard drives), so the project is OK. Also rendered a portion in MPEG later in the project and it still stopped somewhere within one of the media clips with the same error messages.

Although I have no solved the rendereing issue by endering as avi, then converting to mpeg using TMPGEnc, I would still like to do everything "in house" to cut down on the time. The finished output needs to be in a VCD compatible format.

If you have ANY ideas on what could be causing the problem, then let me know.

Thanks in advance

Can you render an MPEG file from the rendered .avi?

Once the file is in avi, I can then converet it using TMPEGEnc with no hassle. It's just that this extra step takes hours. The completed video is in two sections, one part 1h04 mins and the other at 42mins, so you can appreciate the additional time involved. I've now got my completed VCD, so the project is done, but for future projects I would like to take out the avi-->mpg stage for time reasons, and also to reduce the effect of re-compression.

By the way, if you haven't guessed, I'm a bit new to this....
