"Render recipe" for Vimeo clips?

earthrisers wrote on 12/3/2008, 11:37 AM
I joined Vimeo a few weeks ago and was able to upload two video clips but then no luck on subsequent ones rendered the same way. I got the "starts uploading fast then stalls forever" that quite a few people have reported in Vimeo's forums. (My clips are well within length-limits, so that's not a factor.)
I notice that several Vegasfolk have successfully posted there.
Do you have a reliable "recipe" for rendering from Vegas to create clips that upload successfully to Vimeo?
I'm still shooting DV, not HD.

PS: I just joined to Vegas group over at Vimeo, but I don't see any discussions posted there, yet.

I don't think there is anything you can do on your end. I've had problems getting my stuff posted their as well, I think they just have issues dealing with all the media that must be pouring in.

How are you rendering the media? File type, size, bit depth?

Just FYI I am rendering out 720p WMV files at about 3megs - seems to be a decent compromise as far as look and file size go and it looks so much better than Youtube. Of course that's probably why they are being inundated with media :)

Not that you are looking for an alternative, but I use blip.tv and like it a lot. It let's you link/embed to the original source upload footage (I think you get 1 gig per file with the free account and it can be HD- I use DivX) and then it transcodes it to flash so you have two options for your file: a lower quality flash file and a higher quality source file.

Thank you. I had heard about blip.tv recently, but forgot the name. Now I will be checking it out.
In my Vimeo renders (2 successfully uploaded, subsequent ones not),
I've been using these settings, with Vegas' default Codec:
Mode: CBR (Two-pass)
Format: Windows Media Video 9
Image size: DVD quality (640x480)
Pixel aspect ratio: 1.000 (Square)
Frame rate: 29.970 NTSC
Seconds per keyframe: 5
Did NOT check the "Override default compression" checkbox
Video smoothness: 90
Bit rate: High Speed Internet1.76M

I use 720p (from a 1920x1080 60i timeline) compressed to 4 MB/s. The only problem is that Vimeo when compressing seems to change the fps to 24, which makes the motion stuttery in your video if it's sourced as 60i.

If you want to check a few of mine and download them (you have to be signed in for that):

Yahoo Video is my second favorite. It's not as HD as Vimeo but the motion doesn't stutter and it's better than Vimeo if you want to embed on a website:

This is for YouTube but it's the same recipe we use for VimeoHD as well.

I've been using Vimeo with great success. DV SD only. Largest file so far has been 236,000kb. I use MP4 files and get a good result. Lower bit rates will produce smaller files. For SD I think any higher bitrates may be a waste due to Vimeo compression.

Vimeo settings:

Render using Mainconcept AVC/AAC MP4
Project tab: Best
Video tab:
Frame Size: NTSC Sq Pixel 640 x 480
Profile: Main
Frame rate: 29.97
Field order: None (progressive scan)
Pixel aspect Ratio: 1.00000
Number of reference frames 2
Variable bit rate:
Max BPS 2,800,000
Average 1,800,000

Here's one of mine on Vimeo.

Spot I tried getting past the VASST login to read your tutorial, but as often happens I couldn't get in, despite being a customer for years.

I thought I had my password saved, but it wasn't accepted, and there's no box to check or create new password.

I then tried creating a new profile, and it kept saying "Please agree to our terms .... , but there was no box to check to say I agree.

Some knowledge is hard to access!

You're not wrong there. I have experienced the same thing.

I remembered my password, but after several attempts to log in resulting in my returning to the register/login page I decided to reregister. Got to the terms and conditions page but was then stuck with nowhere to go. I tried clicking the 'back' button to get back to the registration page and then it all went pear shaped.

Just when I was getting so excited to finally see how a pro would set up video for youtube, too!

It's not worth creating accounts everywhere just to read information.

And I thought I was the only one having problems logging into the new VASST site :-(

I logged in to VASST just now, just to see if I could, and I could.

Sounds like something sporadic is going on...
