Render to AVI: stuttering, skipping

Okay, guys...here I am rendering my first project. Editing went great...love VF!
But, when I render to an .avi file, that file with either a) barely play in, say Media Player or several other players...skipping, stuttering, etc ro b) not load at all...for instance I can't open the .avi in any of the editing/DVD tools.

What might I be doing wrong? (The file renders to completion fine, it appears, so I must have a setting somewhere I'm missing.)

PS: rendering to mpg1 works fine. I haven't purchased the mpg2 plug-in...stinks that they make you buy that separately, I think.

What template are you using when you render? It sounds like you might be using uncompressed .AVI which ends up being huge ... along the lines of 1.7GB/minute. It's possible your computer isn't fast enough to be able to play back this file. Also, if you hae rendered to uncompressed then, by default, VideoFactory creates an AVI type 2 file which may not be compatible with other software.

Yeah, I used uncompressed. I believe I first tried ntsc dvd, but not sure. Which template is recommended? (The one that generates the smallest file??)

Not really when you consider these two things:

1. Other NLE’s that include an MPEG2 encoder cost $99. VideoFactory ($69) with the MPEG2 plugin ($30) costs $99. So it doesn’t really cost any more than other programs charge.

2. If you own DVD authoring software you probably already have an MPEG2 encoder or two so why pay for yet another one. (Although the MainConcept encoder is really nice)

I actually like the fact that I didn’t have to pay for another MPEG2 encoder when I already had one. I eventually upgraded to Vegas and got the MPEG2 encoder included with that.

Good points, Johnny...I do, indeed, have mp2 encoders within other apps. It would be nice, however, to render directly from VF to mp2 rather than take the extra step of rendering to .avi. (I'm used to it, though. After using Studio 8 where one is always having to use other apps to do things S8 is supposed to do.) IT's just a matter of time vs. $$. I'll save my money for now.

BTW, I did get the .avi render in VF to work...it was the "Uncompressed" template generating huge files that caused the prob. NTSC DVD worked fine.
