Yes. Render as AVI.
Template: Default Template (uncompressed)
Click on Custom. Select Video tab.
Video format: select and configure your DivX/XviD codec.
DivX/XviD files usually contain compressed audio also (often MP3). On the Audio tab you can select an audio codec.
You can also render your audio separately and then multiplex your audio and video files with VirtualDub.

Ahh - cool! I probably wouldn't have found this on my own.

For those looking to use these newere codecs, are there recommendations for which afford the most generally accepted compatibility? What about the sound formats?

I have found (courtesy of another thread) the DVD FAQ, and am slowly consuming its 150+ pages of content now.

Thanks!

Well, I would use XviD (because it's free) with MP3 or AC3 audio.
I would render the audio separately and then multiplex with VirtualDubMod.

But since you mention the DVD FAQ: not many standalone DVD players will play MPEG-4 (they require MPEG-2).
VideoHelp.com has a list of players that do play DivX/XviD/MPEG-4.
