rendered video has anomalies

I have 3 or 4 points in my rendered video where the video hesitates or stutters. In the project file it plays fine and there are no effects or envelopes set that should alter the video. One occurs just before/during a transition. One occurs at the end of one clip across a cut and through the entire next clip. One more is on my credits, where the entire clip stutters. I had created and rendered the credit roll separately (which plays fine on its own and in the project file). All three are different, so it doesn't appear to be a consistent type of event causing the problem. I first rendered with default settings, then again setting to "best", with exact same results. Any suggestions?

Might help to know what format you rendered to and how you did it, settings etc.

I am using V4.0, rendered to an avi, with default NTSC DV settings.

I find it strange that several short clips of stills with quite a bit of track motion and fx, which I created and rendered separately, are uneffected in the second render, whereas the credits (which are more simple) get messed up during the second render.
