Rendering

I once asked what happens if you capture some DV and then render it to DV format -- whether there would be recompression and degradation. The answer was that as long as any given event on the timeline is not modified, there will be no further degradation. However, if there is even the slightest processing on any part of an event, the entire event will be re-rendered. Given the above, I now have several more questions:

1) If you modify the audio portion of an event, is the entire event (video) re-rendered and degraded?

2) The reason I ask question 1 is that VF2 automatically fades audio events in and out when you split them. Do I need to manually adjust these fades to keep the video from being recompressed?

3) Especially if the answer to question 2 is yes (but even if it's not), is there a way to prevent VF2 from doing these automatic fades? I didn't see it in the options.

4) If you prefer video crossfades (between events) to straight cuts, is it good operating procedure to split your events right before and after you do the crossfades so that only the crossfaded portion is re-rendered?

That's all for now. Love this program! Thanks.

I'm still using 1.0, but I can offer some input for question #1 & #4 based on my own testing and experiences:

1. Yes. The entire event (clip) is rendered and subsequently recompressed.
4. Absolutely! In fact, I have made it standard practice when editing with VF. I split to just either side of every effect I add, whether it be a crossfade, transtion, title, volume change, whatever. Using this method, only the event between the splits is rendered leaving the rest to be only copied without rendering. You reduce your rendering times drasticly and at the same time maintain the quality of the source video.

No

No

ctrl+shift+ preferences, internal: change "Quickfade Event Edges" to "False".

Note: Messing with the internal prefs can screw up VideoFactory in a big way, so be very sure of what you are adjusting lest you make the program unusable. CTRL+SHIFT on startup resets all prefs if you get stuck.

4) If you prefer video crossfades (between events) to straight cuts, is it good operating procedure to split your events right before and after you do the crossfades so that only the crossfaded portion is re-rendered?

That will work.

Thanks very much for these answers. Here's a feature request. It would be nice if VF could automate the splitting of events, based on whether there are modifications that will cause re-rendering. MGI's VideoWave seems to have an advantage in this area. It will only re-render frames that it sees have changed from the original. Since VF works with events on an all-or-nothing basis, it would be so cool if it could scan the project and split off parts that will be re-rendered.

Thanks for listening.
