Rendering 16:9 from a 4:3 distorted picture?

I have some footage that was shot in 16:9 mode on a camcorder which imports at 4:3 and is distorted. How do I correct the distortion and render at 16:9 ? Many thanks for any assistance.

Have you set your Project Properties to "Match Media Settings?"

If it is truly an incorrect media flag, you can right-click on the item in Project Media, and change the aspect.
