Rendering 360 VR Video issue - Black screen

Big_AL wrote on 10/1/2023, 1:21 AM

Hi all.

I have been trying for ages to create a VR video. I have an Insta360 camera and VR headset.

I want to record a 360° video that I can later watch in VR on my headset.

I have exported a short 360° video from the Insta App using "Export 360 video" and it is recognised in my Vegas Pro 18.0 (build 527) software.

I followed exactly the information as described in this video.

I create a new project and set the below settings.

The "360° output" is checked in Properties, the "360 mode" is On in the preview window. I can can zoom and pan/tilt as it is playing in Vegas.

I am using a 15 sec clip to test the work flow rather than wasting a lot of time rendering a long video.

I select "Render As" and the "MAGIX HEVC/AAC MP4" is the default format, I have tried 4k and 1080p resolutions and get the same result. I end up with a video that plays in VLC that is black and with no audio. I am able to play 360° video in VLC player, so not sure why I am getting no video render,

Anything I am missing in my process?

Cheers

Al

This issue has been fixed in later versions of Vegas.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

Thanks, can you elaborate please? This capability was apparently working fine in Vegas Pro 16.

Vegas Pro 18 is advertised as having the ability to create 360 videos, Why was no patch put out?

Are you saying, that having bought the software, which does not do as advertised, I am expected to buy another version?

Cheers

OK, I have tried a bunch of different settings and getting no change.  Having read the forum suggestion on posts, please see below the issue I am having.

Simply put, I can import and edit an Insta 360 video file. Project Properties set to 360 video. Video plays and view angles moveable in Preview window. Upon rendering, it is a black screen with no audio.

This is apparently a well known issue.

As above, it was suggested that later versions of Vegas Pro have fixed this issue. However, I located a 2021 post that continues into December 2022 that shows the issue continuing with Version 19. (https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-19-still-black-screen-if-360-rendering--131161/)

I have followed the suggestion of rendering the video as a non-360 video and then adding the spatial metadata in post render. I now have a 360 edited video, but not as I had hoped.

Can someone confirm Vegas Pro 21 can render 360 video files properly, and not require using an additional program to add the spatial metadata?

I don't want to spend money to upgrade to Version 21 only find it has not been fixed and I have the same issue.

Cheers

Al

Thanks for that.

Thankfully it is not onerous to put in the data. Just a shame Vegas Pro can't do what it is supposed to.

I did work out I could insert a 360 FX effect on my clip to set the viewing position at least, before rendering.

Saved me from upgrading my software for no benefit.

Cheers
