I don't think it really makes a difference, unless you are going to master a bunch of tracks at a later date, in which case keep at 24/96 until that time would make sense.

So just do it in Vegas if that suits your purpose.

Now counting the minutes till someone says I'm wrong...

If you're working at 24/96 in Vegas, and later plan on mastering it within Sound Forge, then render it as 24/96 in Vegas. When you open it in Sound Forge and do further processing you now have a better resolution to work with. The final step in Sound Forge should then be dithering it down to 44.1/16 bit if you're final destination is CD.
