Rendering and 'Make Movie.'

Since I purchased VF 2 I have been playing around with 3 minutes of video, learning as many of the features as possible and not getting too upset if things went wrong. I then thought I would make a VCD, so I clicked on 'Make Movie'> Write to Video CD> clicked the radio button to 'Create a Video CD' clicked on 'Next' which took me to Render Settings, checked Render your Project to this Format and Fast Video Resizing,
clicked 'Next' and nothing happened. In fact I did it several times, still nothing.
I then found 'Pre-render Video' whatever that is, I did it, but still I cannot produce a VCD. I have looked at help but can find no answer. Should be interesting when I want to transfer back to analogue tape. Help!

At that point VF should be checking the state of your CD burner. Have you successfully burned a cd with any other software? Have you been able to render, in any format, to a file on your HD?

IanG, thanks for your help, sorry but I'm a complete moron at this point but I'm determined to learn.
Yes I have burned music/photographs and documents to CD. I have never tried video. I don't quite understand your 'render' question? However while the VideoWave 4 was working (which was rare) I was able to record back to tape, so I'm assuming it rendered to the HD!
After 'pre-rendering' yesterday (whatever that is for)I went back to VF today and the video had disappeared, never to be found again. The original footage that I used is still there but the text, FX etc. have gone. It wasn't really important as I used it mainly to learn about the VF system. Have I got a way to go. Maybe I'll do something simple and record back to tape with my analogue Sony 710, if I can figure out how to do that?

Joby, at the point when VF stops working it should first of all be making sure you've got a CD burner available with a writable disk in it. Given that you've used your burner successfully, that's probably OK - if there's a problem with the CD itself you should get an error message. The next thing is to convert your selected video into the right format - this is the rendering. There are several different formats, avi, Real Media, MPEG1, MPEG2 etc. The format for VCD is MPEG1, so VF will try to render your project in that format to a file on disk, before writing it to the CD. One of the options in VF is to just create that MPEG1 as a disk file. In this case the CD burner isn't involved and you decide where to put the file.

So, if you go back to "Make movie" and then select the options to write to a disk file in MPEG1 we'll be able to see what is and isn't working. A thought's just occurred to me (it happens!). The first time you render in MPEG1 you're asked to register the software that does the rendering. There may be a problem there. Are you sure there isn't a window somewhere saying "click here to continue"?

Good luck!
