Rendering and PS3

I'd like to render my videos in an HD format to be streamed to my PS3. I can do this with video only, but as soon as I add audio to my project, the PS3 no longer recognizes my rendered videos. Is anyone else having success rendering in HD to their PS3? Can you walk me through step by step when creating a new project with project settings and render settings? I've tried rendering in various formats including .wmv, .mp4, .mpg, and avi. I've had no difference when adding audio to my projects, although they will play fine through Windows Media and Sony Vegas...they won't stream through the PS3, which doesn't recognize and doesn't even display them in the list of videos available.

Thank you for your direction. I have a couple of questions as I'm still not getting things to work. First, I have a Panasonic HDS-SD20 that I believe is recording in M2TS (at least that is what its being converted too when down loading from SD card) and not NTSC. I'm not sure if this makes a difference. Second, which are you suggesting I utilize...part 2 for WMV or part 3 for MP4 h.264/ACC (Sony AVC)? I've tried both ways to no avail, but will try again this evening and make sure all my settings are exactly as pictured there.

NTSC is a video standard, not a format. If you live in North America, then you are using NTSC and should use 29.97 fps to export. If you live in Europe, you are using PAL and you should use 25 fps to export.

>I've tried both ways to no avail,

My tutorial *works*. It's been used by thousands of people (as it's linked from all over the place). Just make sure you do all the steps required, and exactly as shown. Go for SonyAVC first, WMV as a second option.

I'm using Vegas 9 and while trying Sony AVC, the bit rate (bps) does not give me the option of "5,000,000" and defaults to "512,000." Should I leave it there or set it to "4,000,000?"

Also, when you go to project properties and open the file, do you change those to your settings too or leave them at their opening (default) settings?

You know, you can TYPE on that field! You are not the first person who has this problem btw. I think that's the 4th or 5th time I am told this. Obviously a usability problem there for Sony.

After you do the "match media" on that dialog, you leave them as match media modified it for you, EXCEPT for two fields where you should change manually: Set quality to BEST, and deinterlacing to INTERPOLATE. The rest, leave them the way the "match media" changed them for you.

Also, please upgrade your RAM on your PC. You mention on your profile that you have 1 GB RAM, but 1 GB is not enough for *HD* editing with Vegas and Vista/XP (especially an older installation of XP that's usually loaded). Buy 1 GB more stick of RAM and have someone to install it for you. Speed while editing, and exporting will be much faster as your PC won't have to swap as much anymore.

I'll type in 5,000,000 then.

Also, my opening (default) settings are opening up in PAL...I live in Ohio, shouldn't they be opening as NTSC from what you said earlier? Was it something I accidentally adjusted when creating video? Can I just change them or must I recreate my entire video first? Other than NTSC adjustment, is there another preferred format...HDV 720-30p? 1080i-60p?

Yikes! I must have mis-typed...I have 4 GB.

As I said, it doesn't matter what you get in the beginning. All it matters is how you setup your project properties. Use that "match media" icon, and it will set you up with the correct options (except the two ones that I told you to manually change). Then, just export as per the tutorial.

For future projects, always first set your project properties, and then edit. For this time, just go ahead and export after setting up your project properties, don't re-edit.

Thank you so much for your help. I was able to get things working in .wmv format. What is the difference/benefit to going Sony AVC instead of MMV? Is it a matter of video quality? Which formats in general provide the best quality and which ones the worst?

They are both very close in terms of technological ability, both based on different parts of MPEG4, with h.264 AVC being a tiny bit better at the same bitrate. So just use whatever works for you. ALTHOUGH, the PS3 "prefers" h.264, so Sony AVC might prove a better choice. The problem with SonyAVC is that it's crashier than WMV when exporting long videos. So just pick one that works for you.
