What will you be using the audio for?

AC3 is the "norm". It is a compressed format so in theory it is not lossless, but is a very high quality compressed audio format. Hollywood DVDs use ac3...

The only thing "better" you can use to create a DVD is uncompressed PCM audio (.wav). Takes up a lot more space, which can mean less room for quality video (depends on the length).

Try rendering a few minutes of a project. Then render the audio for that snippet twice: once in AC-3 and once in PCM. Bring the video into DVDA twice, and associate one audio file with one instance and the other audio file with the second instance (or just put two audio tracks on the timeline -- that would be even better). Burn a DVD+RW or DVD-RW, put it on the best home theater system you can find, crank up the volume and switch back and forth. Can you hear a difference? If yes, use PCM. If not, use AC-3.
