Rendering Crashs the computer

Suddenly my VV4.0e will not render anything, old or new projects, in any format. The render starts and then at some point about 2-9% into it (never the same spot), the screen freezes locking up the entire computer. It worked fine 2 weeks ago and nothing has changed since then. Running XP-Pro with a gig of memory. Any thoughts?

Resource sharing, fragmented drives that are heating up, out of memory and disk manager can't handle it, sharing render location with application, bad ram, DMA disabled, proc overheating, these all can cause a crash during intense computations.
Have you loaded any new video related anything? plug ins to Excel? Direct X plugs, codecs, freeware, demo ware? Have you tried a rollback yet?

Only thing I can remember that's new is a little applet for Sony's ImageStation, the service I was hoping to use for uploading video to the web. Nothing else is new.
