Rendering Error Message

I am not a techie and need some help. I am using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Pro 9.0b (Build 92). I am using AVCHD footage from a Sony Camcorder HDR-XR520VE.
I have rendered successfully a small 4 min movie. I now have a 45 minute movie and the rendering stops about 25% in to the job with a message saying "An error occurred while creating the media file Family 2009.avi. An error occurred writing the file. Make sure you have write access to the file/folder and that there is enough free space".
I run Vista Home Premium SP2 32 bit. My processoe is 2.4GHz, RAM 3.00GB. I am running Vegas on an external hard drive (over 1TB spare).
I am using administrator rights.
Hope someone can help PLEASE!!!!
Steve

Hi,

as you're rendering to AVI (maybe even uncompressed) my first guess is that the harddisk's file system is FAT32 probably. FAT32 is not allowing files larger than 4GB and with AVI uncompressed you're likely to get larger files. In that case I'd convert the file system of the harddisk to NTFS. Here's explained how to do so, just in case.
