Rendering for DVD or Bluray

When using any of the Vegas inbuilt templates for rendering for DVD Architect I usually run into problems with deciding the bitrate in order to fit the whole video onto a single DVD/Bluray disc. Every time I have attempted to render directly to the final required format I end up with DVD Architect telling me that it has to re-render the video because it won't fit onto the disc. I would very much like to render directly rather than having to do an intermediate format like standard DV avi  for DVD or bacvk to Sony XDcam for HD material.

You need a bitrate calculator to help determine the bitrate needed for the media. Here is one and there are others if you google. http://www.johncline.com/bitcalc110.zip

This is the bitrate calculator I use.

The path of least pain that I have found is to do 2 renders for each project, one to AC3 Pro, for the audio, and the other to MPG2 for DVD Architect for DVDs (choose widescreen or not) or one of the BluRay templates. Before starting the video render, use the bitrate calculator to figure out the bitrate.

Also be aware that DVDA estimates capacity very very conservatively. If you think your files should fit, and DVDA says they won't, give it a try anyway. You may be pleasantly surprised.

That's good to know because I have had occasions where I thought that I had calculated correctly and the resultant file should have fitted a DVD but DVD-A told me that it needed to re-render to make it fit. 😠
