Rendering for show on television

Ok, I've been making some DVD's and VHS videos to show at work. However, when producing the movies I'm having to bring everything in from the sides of the production area because Movie Studio and DVD Arch have a wider working area than a TV can display.

What's the best way to set up video and DVD so that what I see is what I get on the TV - I'm guessing at this point as to how far I need to bring in the sides so that a standard 27" tv won't chop them off.

Thanks for the help!
Brian

There is a "safe area", margin that allows for up to 10% of the screen to be cut off around the edges (televisions tend to cut off more as they get older).

When you're laying in titles, you'll see a template for a safe area.

Check out the following post for a great discussion on this:

Bottom line is that every TV is different, so you'll want to make use of the "safe zone". For an example of where the safe zone comes into play in Movie Studio, place some text in your video, open the properties for the text event, and then look in the "placement" tab. You'll see a safe zone setting and dashed lines showing the safe zone.

If you have a single TV you want things to work on, then you can always create a test video and figure out how that particular TV is displaying things, then go from there...

Awsome, thanks for the posts. I found the 'safe zone' thing in DVD Arch, but didn't see it MS. However the link had what I needed.

Thanks!

For what it's worth, as far as I know the only place the safe zone shows up in MS is in the placement dialog box for text objects.
