rendering from MTS to MPG for SD editing

Hello.
I apologize if this has been covered but I did a search and couldn't find anything.

I am shooting HD for final delivery on SD DVD. The files generated by my Canon HF100 are MTS.

My question is - can't I just render these MTS files to MPEG-2 for editing instead of using Upshift or Gearshift to get m2t files?

Then on render for DVDA there should be no re-render.

Am I correct on this? Is there a better way?

Thanks.

I don't see why not. I render from MTS over to M2V (mpeg) for hi def with no recompressing in DVDa. You MAY have to letterbox your work because of the resolution difference... but I don't see any other complications. As long as you render a "compliant" dvd then DVDa should not recompress.
