Rendering full HD 1920 x 1080 to smallest file siz

I rendered some video files for Easter (about 30 min) down to less than a 4gb file for a DVD. For some reason rendering the same length video is now taking up to 30gb and higher.... What's the problem? How do people make a video of up to 2 hours long fit on a 4gb DVD? Especially Wide Screen HDV?

you used the uncompressed codec, that's why it's so big. You need to be careful which codec and bitrate you are using.
