Rendering Help

I just converted my cousins home movies from a VHS tape to an avi. I want to put it onto a DVD for him. I rendered the avi to an mpeg-2 using the DVD NTSC setting but I ended up with a file size of 5.35 GB. Too big of course.

I went back to the my .veg file of the home movies and did some editing to gain some space but I'm sure it won't be enough to get me to 4.7 GB. Should I use the default setting rather than the DVD NTSC? I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

How long is the video? If it is close to or over 2 hours, you will either (a) have to drop the burn bitrate and sacrifice quality (although I have done this for 2h 15m videos with no real noticeable effects) or (b) split the project into 2 (or more) DVD's instead of one.

No, don’t use the default. You might try turning down the bitrate on the DVD NTSC template. It defaults to Variable Bit Rate with an average of 6000 kbps. Try turning it down to 5000 kbps average. I’ve gone as low as 4500 kbps with good results.

Thanks guys, I will try turning down the VBR. Hopefully with the editing I have done and the reduced VBR it'll fit.

BTW Johnny I like your website. I have found some of your tips useful.

Thanks. I’m in the process of organizing my web site better and creating more tutorial content for it. It started out as just a personal web page and then when I got heavily into video it took on a life of its own. ;-) I’m glad you found it helpful.
