If your source material is uncompressed .avi and you render to uncompressed .avi, then render again to uncompressed .avi, then there won't be any compression. Similarly if you use DV .avi throughout there won't be any additional compression except where you have transitions, effects, fades, titles, etc. However, SonicFoundry's DV codec is incredibly good at preserving the quality of the image, so these addiitonal compressions make almost no noticeable difference at all.

If your final output is going to be some more compressed format like MPEG or WMV, then you should still use DV .avi for the first renders to minimize the recompression.
