Rendering info at bottom

I've gone through the manual several times, and can't seem to find an answer..

When doing a prerender, a thermometer scale at the bottom of VV shows relative progress. Inside the scale is a phrase typically like, "(2 of 5)." What this means is that VV is currently rendering a 10-second portion of the entire project, labelling it something like "0001.avi".

I have never seen it read (1 of 5), or (5 of 5). What are the first and last files in the series? And why don't they ever take any time in the render?

That readout ("X of Y") is added anytime there are one or more actions queued, which pre-render does. The first and last steps have to do with the pre-render function (setup & cleanup), and the middle steps are the actual ranges being rendered.
