Rendering MPEG2 hangs system

Rendering avi to mpeg2 causes my system to hang - usually
takes 20 min or so (of a 2 hr rendering job). This system
is dedicated to creating SVCDs from my home videos. I can
capture (mjpeg compressed avi)and burn with no problems.
I really need help with this. I've dumped a bunch of money
into this project. I like VF better than all the other
editing tools that I've tried, but if I can't render, ...
Can I get my money back??
System details:
700 MHz Duron
Matrox G400TV
Win98SE
128MB
Gobs of hd space
Nothing else running.

Should have mentioned:
Capturing avi at 704x480
Rendering to mpeg2 at 480x480

I keep thinking of things I left out of my original post.

1. Capturing avi with avi_io, not VF. Tried VF and had a
problem - don't remember the details. avi_io works great.

2. I have had completely successful renders with VF, but it
fails about 4/5 tries - very annoying since most renders
are in the 6 hr range (overnight jobs). Kind of
disappointing to get up to a hung system in the morning.

That should be it!

did you read the posts people had before about "will not
finish render" ? make sure you're on the newest (build 22)
plugin, and to be safe kill power management and screen savers

I'm using build 22 and have made sure NOTHING else is
running. Last night I had 2 hangs out of 2 trys - one after
48 min the other after 19 min.

I'm using W98SE. Are folks having more luck with ME or 2K?
I'm willing to change.

Thanks.

One other thing to try: Pre-render of your entire project
in 5 minutes increments, using the NTSC DV template. If one
of those pre-renders fail, you'll know there's a problem
area somewhere in that section. If all goes well...

...render the whole thing as MPEG. Pre-rendering takes the
fx processing load off your system. You'll only be
transcoding to MPEG from DV if you've pre-rendered. Its
possible that there's an effects-heavy sequence in there
somewhere that's causing the MPEG encoder to choke.

If this doesn't work, email me the .vf project file (no
media) and I'll take a look-
