Rendering - no preview

When I render to MPEG2 I get no moving preview showing me where the encoder is.
There's a progress bar, but nothing else.
Curiously, if I render to SVCD, the preview alters shape to reflect the squashed up format of SVCD; that is, there are grey vertical bars at either side of the preview window. The preview window itself is black.
However, if I render to DVD format, the first frame of the clip is then shown for the duration of the rendering.

Is this normal?

I'm guessing that the previews were eliminated to speed up rendering. I've noticed that even when rendering to a format that does show a preview, the preview window is now only updated once every five frames.

I do kinda miss seeing the preview as the render progresses. It would be nice if this was an option that could be turned back on. I can't imagine it makes a huge difference in the render length, and often i would be willing to spend the extra time so i could watch.

There is an option titled "Show progress in video preview window while rendering". I wonder what this options does, since, like you both, I don't get any preview while rendering to MPEG2. I do get preview while rendering other formats, however, so it probably affects those...
