Rendering problems - software or hardware?

I just purchased a new computer and installed version 6.0b. When I try to render a project the computer either freezes up, stops the process with an error message, or just drops out all together and my machine re-boots without warning.
When I get the error message it reads:

Does anyone know what this is? Is this a hardware or software issue?
What can I do about this?

Thanks for your help.

If you are running Vista you need version 8 of Vegas.

Thanks for the reply. I'm using Windows XP and Vegas version 6.0b.

It is the avi plugin that crashes. Are you trying to edit any Xvid or dvix files? You see, vegas don't really support those formats.

I'm editing mpeg 1 files and trying to render them to any format I can - Mpeg1, wmf, avi mov. It doesn't matter which format I try, the system either crashes or gives me that error message.

Yeah, an incompatibility I guess. The only thing you can do is temporarily uninstall Vms6, install the trial of vegas 8, and do your job for 15 days, and then re-install vegas 6 back and use it with other formats. You can't do much about it unless you upgrade to Vegas 8 (which I don't think it would crash, try it).

aviplug.dll in v6.0b is older than in v8, so Eugenia's suggestion of downloading and testing the trial is a good one.

Before you do that, does the problem with 6.0b happen with any project or just this particular one? Instead of MPEG-1 input, what if you try some different input? You should figure out if it's the input that's causing a problem, or something else.

You also mentioned that either the system crashes, or Vegas gives you a message. When you say the system crashes, what do you mean? Do you get a blue screen? That might be symptomatic or hardware/device driver issues which you will need to resolve. Make sure your system meets Vegas' requirements and has latest WinXP updates and also drivers for your graphics and audio devices.
