Rendering Times for Mpeg2

So I'm rendering my first mpeg2 file for the purpose of creating my first dvd...and its taking forever!!! I'm using vegas4 on the following computer:

p4-2.6ghz,533mhz FSB, 512mb ram, 120gb (7200rpm,8mb buffer) HD, 64mb geforce4 440mx video card (included all info just in case it was wanted). I'm rendering a 4 minute segment. The average event in the timeline has about 3-4 filters, and varying velocity envelopes (basically for slow-mo effects). I'm using pretty much the default settings for mpeg2, using the "best" video quality.

I'm a little over half way through rendering, and its looking like the total rendering time for this 4 minute event is going to be about 2+ hours (around 2:15 to be exact)...does this seem right? I just purchased this computer, and am new to rendering in general in any NLE, so I'm not sure what to expect...

thanks!

It's hard to say what "seems" right. Yes, rendering takes time. My final 2 hour wedding videos usually take around 10 hours - however that's AFTER they have already been rendered to AVI files (PIII 750 MHz). You may see if it goes faster by rendereing to AVI and then rendering that AVI to MPG.

You also say you have 3-4 filters with velocity changes. Each of these take time - some more time than others. What filters? Some filters really slow down the rendering process. So, depending what what you are actually doing, yes it COULD take that long.

FWIW:

some have debated the utility of using the Best setting - might speed things up set to good re: applying the filters.

There was a post here a day or so ago where one of the SOFO folks listed the relative speed of the filters in Vegas.

Myself, I've found that in some cases it pays to use VirtualDub for many filtering, cropping, resizing tasks rendering to a lossless format, opening the result in VV4c for editing & render.

A matter of opinion more or less, I still think the older ligos codec that came with ulead stuff is a bit faster then Mainconcept, or even ligos in other incarnations. In fact, keep an old copy of video studio5 installed just for that, which you can find for very cheap - also does better with really low bitrate IMO.

Otherwise resign yourself to a world of waiting for renders which will often go much longer then what you're experiencing now. Use your old PC, or another (cheaper?) one if you need to do something while your p4 renders, or render overnight whilst sleeping.
