Rendering to MediaPlayer Requirments?

I rendered a .veg file into .mpeg but if I try to open it in other computers it wouldn't - apperantly it needs the Microsoft MediaPlayer 9 in order play. Some people have WIN98 - NOT SE or WIN NT and so can't install MMP 9
So I wonder which kind of rendering produces files that even earlier versions of Windows Media Player can open? Most people don't seem to have Quicktime either and if they are on a corporate or municipal network then they can't install new stuff with out 47 carbon copies of permissions etc.

TIA! Gerrie

Did you render to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2? Almost any media player, even some fairly ancient ones, can play MPEG-1 files. The MPEG-2 codec must be licensed and paid for, so very few players include it. If you render to MPEG-1 then the file should play on just about any computer you try it on.

You don't need WMP 9 to play mpeg 1. Even windows 2000 or XP don't come with WMP 9 (well, new versions of XP probley do).

Also, make sure you are calling it .mpg NOT .mpeg. Windows doesn't like extensions with more then 3 letters.... it's not automaticly setup to play them.

How are you getting your video to people? If it's on a CD, include a copy of WMP9 AND WMP7 (for people who are pre 98SE), or if it's via a newwork connection (non internet) have a link to a copy of WMP 9 & 7 on yur local HD. Or... if it's over DSL/Cable/T1, well... make then spend the 1 minute to download the update!

Or make an AVI with the Intel Indeo file compressor. It's crappy, but it's also way out of date so they can run it!
